Congregation Beth Shalom will mark Tu B’Av — a Jewish holiday with love as its central theme — with a free pre-Shabbat concert, Friday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Helfant Chapel. Kabbalat Shabbat services begin at 7 p.m.

The concert, titled “Songs of Love,” will include music by Yana Chudnovsky (piano), Amy Lindsay (piano and voice), Joel Lindsay (guitar and voice), Beth Jacobs (voice), Maggie Levinson (voice) and Cantor Ben Rosner (voice, guitar, balalaika).

Music will be sung in English, Yiddish, French, Hebrew, Italian and Ladino.

In the Talmud, Tu b'Av is considered one of the most joyous days in the Jewish calendar.

During the time of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, the 15th of Av marked the beginning of the grape harvest. The Talmud teaches that the daughters of Israel used to dress in white and go out to the vineyards to dance. Young, unmarried men would follow them with the hope of finding a bride.
